[f.g.i] Presents: My Top 10 Adventure Movies

ad·ven·ture [ad-ven-cher]  (1) An exciting or unusual experience. (2) A risky undertaking; hazardous action of uncertain outcome. (3) The encountering of risks. (4) Something that is most likely a very, very bad idea.

#10 "Stand By Me"

Gordie, Teddy, Chris, and Vern decide to go on a quest to find the body of a missing boy. I don't know about you, but I don't think I would have had the balls to do this - no way.

#9 "Hook"

In my opinion, this is the best version of the whole Peter Pan story. Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins are hilarious, especially during that pirate baseball game.

#8 "The Neverending Story"

Bookworm Sebastian reads the story of young warrior Atreyu as he tries save the world of Fantasia. I wanted a friggin' Luck Dragon for Christmas thanks to this movie.

#7 "Willow"

I know I already did a feature on this movie, but it's absolutely necessary to include it on this list! You ever wonder what LOTR would be like with real hobbits? Yeah.

#6 "The Dark Crystal"

The world is split into two dominant races - the Skeksis and the Mystics. Jen and Kira are the lone Gelflings who must bring peace to the realm by finding the crystal shard.

#5 "Jurassic Park"

What happens when John Hammond decides to play God and recreate living dinosaurs? Well, all hell breaks loose of course. How long do you think you'd survive on that island?

#4 "The Goonies"

What kid doesn't want to go on an adventure like this? Mikey and the gang go on a mission to find the treasure of One-Eyed Willy, with the sinister Fratellis on their tail.

#3 "The Wizard Of Oz"

Call me childish, but I friggin' love this movie. It's a classic adventure story that still holds up today. You can't deny its epic nature, despite how much you hate the singing.

#2 "LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring"

When I read the first book, I knew that first movie was going be awesome. Nothing even compares to the theater experience I had when I saw this. I want to get my quest on, too.

#1 "Indiana Jones & the Raiders of the Lost Ark"

Duh, winning. Indiana Jones really solidified himself as the ultimate adventurer. The first installment is by far my favorite, and dare I say it - one of the best movies of all time.

  1. Personally, you could not have chosen a better number 1!! And I love the list idea.

  2. I can't believe you did this list, I was literally thinking about doing the exact same thing! Great minds! I'm glad you beat me to the punch, you have some killer movies here. Indiana Jones is, of course, brilliant. Hook is another great one I wouldn't have thought up--I saw that many times growing up, but I haven't seen it since, I'll definitely have to revisit that one.

  3. Great post. I laughed pretty hard at the Charlie Sheen quote at the end. Great stuff.

  6. I love Raiders of the Lost Arc, but no way would I put it number 1. Where is the Return of the King? Great list!

  7. Nothing puts a smile on my face quicker than going around yelling "Bad Form" as people look on trying to figure just what the hell I'm going on about. I don't care if it is a bit stupid, Hook is fun and Hoffman is awesome.

With the people looking for a bit of LOTR love, but you can't go too wrong with Indiana Jones at the top.

  8. I'm finding that most of the people in my life haven't seen/don't remember Dark Crystal. I know this because I've made some KILLER references to it recently and everyone just stares at me. It's turning into a forgotten classic. Great list!

  9. @ Matty: Why, thank you!

@ M. Hufstader: Wow that is creepy! I had the idea to do this because I spent Monday afternoon watch Indy 1 and 3, haha!

    @ A. Duhamel: I bet you did.

@ Lesya: OMG you must watch it! It's such a great movie, you will love it!

@ MRAnthrope: Oh man, you gotta watch THE DARK CRYSTAL! It's so trippy, kind of like THE LABYRINTH - minus David Bowie's junk and the singing!

@ Matt S.: Sir, I'm sure your intentions are good but there is no wat that I would have given the #1 spot to anyone besides Indiana Jones. Done and done.

@ Univarn: "Bad form!!!" Hahaha! I've actually used this as well and I think it's so righteous. I've also wanted a reason to shout, "Ru-fi-oooooo" at the top of my lungs! BTW, thanks for supporting the #1 choice :)

@ Brian: So awesome, Brian! I totally back you up on those references, because I know I have made some as well. Have you ever pulled the Chamberlain whimper? It's an easy way to annoy the crap out of someone, haha!
